每年的3月12日，是我国的植树节。3月12日是孙中山先生逝世的纪念日，确定这天为植树节，一是从植树的季节考虑，二是为了纪念孙中山先生。
1883年，年仅18岁的孙中山，从美国檀香山带回幼苗栽种成材。孙中山也是我国近代最早提倡植树造林的人。他的《上李鸿章书》中提出，中国欲强，必须“急兴农学，讲究树艺”。辛亥革命后，在孙中山的倡议下，当时的北洋政府规定以每年清明节为植树节。1925年3月12日，孙中山在北平病逝。国民政府为纪念孙中山，将植树节改为了他逝世的3月12日。新中国成立后，第五届全国人大常委会第六次会议，将每年的3月12日定为植树节。
